Speaking as a Camiseta Jesus Walks shirt, I’ll answer that. Nurses do *not* “ignore” calls for help, usually. Sometimes they are exhausted, overworked, or there are a thousand lights going on at once. We try. We really do. But yes, if someone is a “frequent flyer” on the call button for things like “Fluff my pillow” or “These flowers are wilted. Take them away!” we tend to be slower to answer. we shouldn’t, but many of us do. That said, I shall now tell a story that I’ve told on here before. I was one very sick patient, and could not get out of bed. I needed the bedpan. I put on the call light. I waited. And waited. And waited! Fairly soon things began to get rather serious. I neede to go. My back teeth were floating. It HURT! My light was still blinking (I could hear the ping! ping! ping! from the nurse’s station.

If a patient is quiet, not leaning on the Camiseta Jesus Walks shirt, they do get left alone. Of course “left alone” in an acute facility is a very relative term! I’ve been on both sides of the bed rails, and as any patient can attest… sometimes all you want to do is just sleeeeeeep! *Not Happening!* Temperature, pulse, blood pressure, more blood sticks, X-ray wants to see you, time for your bath, when did you last void, change the bed on and on and on! Having (when I was working) had my fill of the “Nurse… nurse… nuuuurrrrrse” calls from patients, I vowed to myself not to be that patient. What to do? I was relatively immobile, but still posessed a good set of lungs. SO… I cranked my bed head up, up UP until I was sitting bolt upright. Yes, there was ressure on my distended bladder, but it was a means to an end… I filled my lungs, and began… to sing!
